Always considered to be the prime mover in the preservation of ex-Great Western locomotives at the end of steam on the Western Region in 1965, the GWS has, in over 50 years, collected numerous locomotives directly from BR and latterly from Woodhams yard at Barry. Added to that the Society has ammassed a considerable collection of artefacts and items of memorabilia for exhibition in its museum at Didcot. This

programme examines the success of the GWS over this longÂ period and the growth of the site at Didcot over the years. We begin with the early days at Taplow before the old motive power site at Didcot was made available. Footage of these times is added to early times on arrival at Didcot. The Mixed Traffic event held inÂ June was to see diesel hydraulics ofÂ the Hymek and Warship classes withÂ the groupâs Class 14 and two main lineÂ freight companiesâ visiting locomotives –Â a Class 56 and a 66.

The event was enhanced with the use of the Somerset & Dorset Trustâs Ruston &Â Hornsby 0-4-0 shunter at Washford and itâs 7F steam locomotive No. 53808 whichÂ operated the limited steam service.

Locomotive featured is Large Prairie No. 4160 which fortunately still survives today at the West Somerset Railway. The DVD features the operation to prepare No. 4160 at Severn Tunnel Junction depot for its dayâs work banking through the tunnel and up to Pilning following the nearly 4-mile route. No. 4160 was, like its fellow members of the class based at Severn Tunnel Jct in the final days, saved as they went to Barry following withdrawal.Â We follow the story of No. 4160 into preservation and of itsÂ final day in operation on the West Somerset Railway and also the story of the final driver on the day, Eric Broom, who was once a fireman at Severn Tunnel Jct. We delve into the history of the tunnel and hear from an engineer who was involved in the maintenance of the tunnel on a day-to-day basis.
